City’s reserves started their County Cup challenge at home to IOW League side, Carisbrooke Utd. The islanders who hail from Newport, came set to defend and put 11 men plus the team mini bus behind the ball. City retained possession throughout but lacked the final pass to create good chances. The first real opportunity came after 40 minutes, when Ben Morgan played the ball over the top of the defence and Tom Riddell was clattered by the visiting keeper. City’s captain, Dean Lavelle took the resultant penalty but saw his effort hit the right hand post.  Tom Butcher then hit the bar on the stroke of half time from just inside the box.
 
City came out firing at the start of the second half with slicker passing and improved movement. It still took until the 70th minute before City took the lead. Tom Butcher played an exquisite 20 yard pass over the defence to leave Riddell one on one. Riddell placed his left footed shot under the advancing keeper.
 
Carisbrooke were now looking tired and immediately from the restart, Butcher won the ball in the centre circle, and after riding three challenges, he fed the ball to Riddell, who set Ben Morgan away down the left wing.  Morgan’s cross to the back post was met by the head of the impressive Alderman, down into the corner of the goal.
 
City’s third came when Lavelle fed Morgan on the right and his cross to the back post saw Sam Law and the islanders right back contest the ball, with the Carisbrooke player winning but succeeding only in diverting the ball into his own goal.
 
City’s self-proclaimed Manager of the Month, Danny Robinson was delighted with his sides clean sheet, and whilst reticent to single out players was very pleased with Alderman’s contribution, Matt Burke, a 25th minute substitution for Shane Lewis, plus MOM Matt Palmer, and captain Dean Lavelle.
