Moneyfields 1 Winchester City 3
Moneyfields Res 1 WinchesterCity Res 3

City’s second string moved up to sixth place in the table with a convincing win at Moneyfields, thanks to a Richard Gregory brace with Dean Smith getting the third.

The first half was very even with chances at both ends. As the half progressed the Pompey side took greater control and Andy Smallpiece had to be at his best to make two point blank saves to ensure City ended the first half on level terms. City’s Rick Staples came closest to beating his own keeper when he headed against the bar. The ball bounced onto the goal line before being scrambled clear. As the half ended, Dean Smith spurned a good opportunity when his volley on the edge of the box was hit straight at the goalkeeper, following good work by Richard Gregroy.

City are getting used to making a strong start to the second half, but they excelled themselves on this occasion, scoring without Moneyfields touching the ball. The ball was layed back to Matt Palmer from the kick off who hit a 30 yard crossfield ball to Matt Burke. Burke touched the ball back to Steven Howard who whipped a cross in. Richard Gregory controlled and slotted the ball behind the Moneyfields keeper.

Within 10 minutes the match was over. Firstly, Gregory gained his second, again with a touch and clinical finish off the goalkeepers right hand post, following Matt Burke’s 30 yard mazy run. Then, Smith smashed the ball into the roof of the net after Butcher had wiggled his way through 2 challenges.

City were now in total control, dominating possession and creating chances. Gregory almost got his hat trick when his 30 yard free kick was tipped onto the bar by the keeper, the ball falling to Dean Smith in the six yard box, who managed to blast it over the bar.

Moneyfields then hit back on the break. The nippy centre forward toe poked past Rick Staples, who fouled. The resultant penalty was dispatched with ease.

Manager Robinson then made 3 substitutions with Elliot Goater replacing James O’Keefe, Tom Delf for Tom Butcher and Dan Hancock for Joe Wright.

Gregory had one final chance and Matt Palmer pulled a shot narrowly wide, before the match petered out.

Robinson was delighted with Matt Burke’s contribution down the right hand side and pleased to see a smile on goalscorer Gregory’s face, plus James O’Keefe’s return from injury. The team retained possession well and did not get drawn into a physical confrontation with a typical Portsmouth side.
City host AFC Totton, who also have only one defeat to their name this season, on Wednesday night at the Denplan, kick off 7:45pm.
