City Reserves 4 Cowes Sports Reserves 1
With no First X1 fixture, Winchester City’s attention turned to the Reserves when they took on Cowes Sports Reserves last Saturday. Manager Andy Leader used the opportunity to take a look at a few players although Second X1 Manager Tim Cole ran the game. City took an early lead when Sam Lockyer headed home from a corner and for a period City looked as if they would run away with the game. Matt Czastka put in a good run and shot just wide and Ben Bosley had a shot diverted for a corner when it looked as if the defender had handled the ball.
Mark Lilley ran all over the place and received a couple of hard knocks for his troubles but without reward. Gradually, however Cowes began to smother the attacks and although not creating anything themselves, prevented City from increasing their lead.
The second half started with a shock with Cowes putting in a penetrating attack and Clint Davies having to make a flying save. City soon gained control and Czastka slipped the ball through to Bosley who hit the post with his shot but took a knock to the head in the process and was taken off and replaced by Ross Diaper.
In the 58th minute Cowes equalised with a stunning shot on the break and City hit back when Diaper’s shot was bundled away by the keeper and Czastka blazed the loose over the bar.
City regained the lead in the 61st minute when a free kick from was headed home by Lockyer. As City kept up the pressure Cowes Joe Adams
headed into his own net to increase the home side’s lead.
Dave Lewis and Terry Cox now came off to rest them for Tuesday’s game and Andy Jacob and Rick Staples substituted. Lilley continued to cause havoc in the Cowes defence and eventually frustrated the defender into giving away a penalty which he generously allowed Lockyer to take and he duly completed his hat trick from the spot.
This Saturday Wincheter City Reserves are away to Solent WTL in the Hampshire Intermediate Cup.
City: Clint Davies, Steve Llewellym, Adam Lang, Adam George, Andy Darnton, Terry Cox, Matt Czastka, Dave Lewis, Mark Lilley, Ben Bosley,
Sam Lockyer, Substitutes, Andy Jacob (75th), Rick Staples, 75th), Ross Diaper (63rd).
