July 27th
Winchester City 2 Fleetlands 1
After a number of training sessions and trials Winchester took to the pitch for their first competitive match with a makeshift team that never managed to really gel. Even so Winchester were too good for the opposition and comfortably ran out winners. 2 stunning goals, one from Jack Norman the other from Royce Reed were the only brights spots in an otherwise forgetable game. Jack was particularly pleased scoring against his old team.
August 10th
Winchester City 1 AFC Totton 5
With a number of the squad on holiday and the remainder thinking they should be! Winchester suffered a thrashing at the hands of AFC Totton. Winchester never really got into the game and although Mike Glanville managed to grab a goal the only real positive to come out of the game was we can only get better.
August 21st
Winchester City 3 AFC Stoneham 0
Finally on a Thursday evening at Couch Green (without the benefit of floodlights!) things are starting to come together.
Still with a squad of 24 there is huge competition for every position on the field and no player is safe and with the management still trying to decide who stays and who goes Winchester opted to field 2 completely different sides in each half of this game. In the first half the game was fairly evenly balanced but with a goal by Adam Saunders Winchester went into half time 1 - 0 up. In the second half Stoneham were never allowed in to the game and finally we started to see the real potential of the Winchester side. Two further goals by Jamie Craven and Royce Reed gave Winchester a resounding 3 - 0 win and some justified confidence to take into the next game.
August 23rd
Winchester City 4 Salisbury City 0
The squad is still no smaller and the management are still giving everyone a chance to prove themselves indispensable. Once again it was a tale of two halves. Team one (first half) matched Salisbury tackle for tackle, shot for shot and once again went into halftime 1 - 0 ahead thanks to another thunderbolt shot from Royce Reed. However after the break Winchester again took complete control, dominating at the back, dictating the midfield and looking dangerous with every attack. 3 second half Goals from Josh Fernandez, Peter Walker and Zak Nichols totally destroyed Salisbury and saw Winchester run out easy winners.
August 27th
Winchester City 2 Bournemouth 2
Every player wanted to be in tonights game, under the floodlights at the Denplan Stadium so they could pit their skills against the best in the Bournemouth Academy. Just 1 month ago the Winchester team would have been played off the pitch but we have progressed so far that it was Winchester that looked most likely to walk away with the win even though it was Bournemouth that struck first. A fantastic bending shot from Danny King put Winchester back on level terms and a poachers goal from Mike Glanville put Winchester 2 - 1 ahead.
With time fast running out Winchester learnt another valuable lesson - that against top teams it's never over until the final whistle goes. Against the run of play Bournemouth broke away and grabbed an equaliser to make the final score 2 - 2.
August 31st
Winchester City 1 Hampshire U18s 0
The final pre season match saw Winchester welcoming the Hampshire U18s Reps side to Couch Green.
Following on after Winchester U16s had already beaten the U16 Reps the pressure was on the U18s to make it a clean sweep. From the start it was a close encounter with both teams creating good chances and both keepers making great saves to keep the scores level. It was always going to be a game that would be won by something extraordinary and so it proved with Tyler Wyeth finding the net, something he didn't mnage to do at all last season! A great win to finish an ever improving pre season...
6 Games, 4 Wins, 1 draw, 1 loss
Well done to all and lets keep it going for the season.
