Tuesday 4th November
Winchester City 8 Thatcham Town 1
City scored another high scoring impressive victory in a match that was full of controversy for the first fifteen minutes before ebbing away to an easy City victory.
City started with a goal on five minutes, Kevin Brewster firing home his first league goal of the season after Adam Rogers had turned back a Matthew Bicknell cross. Andrew Forbes restored to the starting line up broke thorough a static Town defence on eleven minutes only to be upended just outside the box by Town defender Ashley Perry. Referee Dave Beament saw the challenge as worthy enough to deserve a red card and Town were down to ten men.
Two minutes later a ball into the Thatcham area was deflected high into the night air by a Thatcham defender falling just under the bar where David Goss bundled the ball over the line. Thatcham were adamant that the ball had been handled but after a lengthy consultation with his linesman, Mr Beament allowed the goal to stand.
More drama followed in the eighteenth minute. Bicknell racing into the area was tripped by Daniel Oatway, Winchester penalty. Step up Forbes. Penalty low to the goalkeepers Alan Mann right, saved. Penalty ordered to be retaken as Mann had moved. Forbes remain, second penalty low to Manns right again Mann saved again following the intervention of an assistants flag another retake as the keeper had moved. Third attempt mid height to the left of Mann and City were three goals ahead.
The rest of the match was never going to match the early drama. Forbes added his second slotting home from a Danny Smith cross on thirty-six minutes, whilst Rogers netted on the stroke of half time but the effort was disallowed for offside.
On the hour Bicknells cross was headed home by Rogers, Forbes completed his hat trick on sixty-six minutes for his 36th strike of the season. Thatcham pulled a goal back seven minutes later Ian Davies slotting past a completely unguarded Joe McCormack.
Lloyd Webber netted his second goal in two games with an exquisite strike with ten minutes remaining. Forbes had a header strike the post before Rogers netted the final goal of the game, his seventh goal in three matches, being set up by Forbes, Rogers took time and found composure before firing past the luckless Mann who had produced a number of excellent stops all evening.
City : McCormack, Dyke, Bicknell (L Green), Smith, Goss, Blake, Webber (Batchelor), Lang (Laister), Rogers, Forbes, Brewster
