Tuesday 11th November
Winchester City 1 A F C Newbury 1
Only for the second time in two seasons did Winchester City fail to take maximum points from a home league game, when fourth placed A F C Newbury visited the Denplan City Ground in this Sydenhams Wessex League fixture.
In a carbon copy of the sides match at home to Wimborne Town earlier this season when City did not produce a victory, City were the better side for the opening half. In the first thirty seconds, A F C Newbury goalkeeper David Hook saved two fine efforts from Kevin Brewster.
City though went in front on sixteen minutes, Brewster’s turn allowed the ball to fall for Andrew Forbes and his shot was parried by Hook and Rogers was the first to react and shoot home.
Shaun Dyke saw a low shot saved by Hook and with the interval approaching a Matthew Bicknell free kick was chested down by Forbes into the path of Brewster who agonisingly watched Hook clamber across his goal to produce another fine stop.
The second half saw City start in the ascendancy, Brewster breaking free of the Newbury defence early on before shooting wide. Seven minutes into the second half Forbes put the ball into the back of the net from a Bicknell free kick but the effort was disallowed for offside.
Rogers saw a header from a Dyke cross narrowly miss the target then Lloyd Webber set up Forbes but the striker lofted the ball over the goal. As the half wore on the visiting side were growing in confidence and went further in search of an equalising goal.
With ten minute remaining a free kick from twenty five yards was struck low by Newbury substitute Danny Mattingley and the ball found its way through the City defensive wall and nestled in the bottom corner of the net and Newbury were level.
Another free kick a few minutes later by Jeremy Newton flew juste over the bar as Newbury sensed they might be on for more than a point. In the final minute David Goss saw header again saved by Hook and both sides had to be content with a point from an excellent game of football.
City : McCormack, Dyke, Bicknell, Smith, Goss, Blake, Webber (L Green 79), Lang, Rogers (Gearing 79), Forbes, Brewster Unused sub Laister
